Do you keep your old VIN numbers?

I keep a spreadsheet of the VIN numbers and details of all the cars I’ve had over the years. There are a few in the early years that I don’t know, but anything recent I keep a record.

Including cars for my wife and kids, I’ve had 41 vehicles. I might have car ADD! And I’m not that old! Of those 41, 37% have been manual, 27% used, 73% new.

I do it a bit different , I keep the licence plate. I write the car and mileage when we move on from that car. I have a weird thing that each car needs its own plate. Never transfer.

I wish that I did - a few of them are classics now, and I’d love to find them and buy them back, if they haven’t been crushed by now.

I do have a spreadsheet with the details I remember on all   of them, and I do essentially remember the chassis number on my first two cars.

I retroactively dug up my old vehicle identification number numbers by pulling t he info from old insurance records that I hadn’t thrown out yet. It’s allowed me to learn more about the cars that I owned before I developed an actual interest in cars . I always knew that my old ’84 Delta 88 had a V8, but now I know which V8 i t was (307) .

Yup!  Had to dig through some old records to backfill, but I’ve got them all.

That would be expensive in my state. When the registration is transferred the plate goes with it. I’d lose whatever excise tax credit would come from the prior vehicle. So, do you have all the old plates on display? I have a few in my garage.

Dont have a pic of it but I have them hanging above my living room.

And ah ok, here in Ohio its $45 reg and $10 bucks for plates. So it just easier to get new plates

I don’t keep a spread sheet or anything that consolidated, but I do keep copies of titles and bills of sale from all vehicles I own. I could grab vins from those if I ever needed to. I also always keep the plate and put them up in the garage when I move along a car.

I wish I had, I always wonder what happened to them. Especially my old highschool truck.

Nope...  but I’ve got my Sol and F30's VINs memorized as I used them at parts counters so many times.
